Cold Feet at Southern and Partners
COLD FEET spotlights the work of five emerging contemporary photographers, all aged between 23-27, and explores the presence of a collective generational sentiment. The exhibition’s title refers to the group of artists themselves as much as it does the work on display; it reflects upon a shared period of life – your mid-twenties – and the feelings of curiosity, hesitation and anxiety that accompany it. Presented by Christina Libri in the project space of Southern & Partners in Soho, COLD FEET will invite you to explore the collective unease these works carry, offering a chance to witness their quiet openness and vulnerability. Within this intimate space, setting these photographers into conversation with each other, there is a palpable undercurrent of possibility.
Kendal Walker’s photographs are deeply personal, even diaristic. There is a palpable intimacy, an unflinching openness between photographer and sitter present throughout the portraits. Oftentimes surreal in quality, Walker’s subjects are staged to possess a vulnerability that borders on discomfort. If Walker’s portraits play with the uncanny, her landscapes have an equally otherworldly quality. They present indeterminate spaces adrift from the familiar, ones that hover just outside memory. Reflecting the photographer’s experience of growing up Utah before moving to London, Walker’s photographs drift between geographies, and in doing so, between memory, familiarity and invention.
