Spanning work between 2018 and 2025 across Utah, New York, and London, TRACKS by photographer Kendal Walker moves between diaristic portraiture and landscape photography, exploring themes of memory and the ways places linger, distort, and return. Released alongside Walker’s first monograph published by innen, TRACKS is rooted in personal experience. It considers photography as a way of tracing what remains. Imprints left behind by relationships, home (here or there), youth and change.
Throughout the work, scenes shift between the expansiveness of rural America and the saturation of London. Highways, bedrooms, bodies, light, empty interiors, desert, snow, and rain recur not as symbols, but as fragments of lived experience; moments held close before they drift. Walker’s photographs possess an intimacy that feels both instinctive and deliberate. Her portraits hover between vulnerability and performance, while abstracted landscapes are charged less by visual description than by sensation. Strung together, the images form an emotional logic rather than a linear one.
Through TRACKS, Walker carves an array of desire paths. Uneven and worn, she walks, again and again. Down one dusty enough to make your eyes sting, another that drags the mud in, and down the one that leads back to home. TRACKS does not wager for resolution, but instead reaches out into the in-between (past and present), collecting the unfolding.
